The agreements represent a healthy mix of single and multi-unit growth, with four current franchisees signing on to open six additional stores and 16 new franchisees who will be opening 24 stores.

Resilience in the Face of a Difficult 2020
The day before Rich Epps was set to sign the franchise agreement for his eighth Batteries Plus store in Florida, the state announced lockdown measures. Understandably, Rich took a couple of months to see how the pandemic would play out. After seeing how well his existing stores performed, he moved ahead in signing his agreement in May and opened his store in Sun City Center, Florida, in October.
Rich’s experience showcases the confidence Batteries Plus franchisees have in the brand’s differentiation through its products and services. Throughout the year, a total of five Batteries Plus locations opened – with two new and three current franchise owners opening stores in March, May, June and October.
Batteries Plus stores were deemed essential businesses, which not only allowed them to remain open but also showed the adaptability of the brand to meet customer needs at a time when health and safety were a top priority. Before the pandemic hit the U.S., Batteries Plus had already developed a robust omnichannel infrastructure, featuring an e-commerce storefront that allows customers to find whatever product they need online, buy it and pick it up in-store. This program was adjusted within 48 hours to adopt curbside pickup on a national level, giving customers that didn’t feel comfortable going into a physical storefront the opportunity to still fulfill their needs at Batteries Plus.
Batteries Plus’ omnichannel business model enables customers to quickly and conveniently get products they cannot live without. These include batteries for wheelchairs, medical devices, smartphones, computers, car key fobs and smart home products. Franchisees also offer thousands of lighting products, gear and equipment and automotive products.
The brand remains competitive against other e-commerce retailers because franchisees and their employees are local problem solvers who can provide immediate help to both in-store customers and online shoppers. In fact, Batteries Plus saw double-digit growth through its e-commerce channel throughout the pandemic, as the company achieved record-breaking sales in June, July and August.
As a result, Batteries Plus franchisees were able to achieve system-wide same-store sales of $579.8 million in 2020 – a 2.7 percent increase over the previous year.
Batteries Plus Franchising Goals in 2021
Current and new Batteries Plus franchise owners alike have been inspired by the brand’s performance last year and are helping to keep the momentum building in 2021.
California-based Batteries Plus franchise owner Ryan Tollefson already co-owns six stores. After witnessing the resilience of the brand throughout the pandemic, he signed an agreement to open three additional locations in the greater Sacramento area. Meanwhile, an entrepreneurial family in Boise, Idaho will be bringing four stores to this previously underserved market .
To keep providing essential products and services to consumers across the country, Batteries Plus has a target of 55 signed agreements through the end of the year. The brand has identified several markets that are ripe for development, including the Southeastern and Northeastern U.S., as well as Texas – outside of the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. Aside from highly dense markets, there are opportunities for multi-unit growth across all territories.
