Total startup costs range from $190,144 to $367,358. To financially qualify, you will need a net worth of $250,000 and liquid assets of at least $100,000. Liquid assets can include any combination of cash, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement accounts or any other non-borrowed source. A co-applicant may assist in meeting this requirement.
As a franchise business, we are regulated as to how an earnings claim can be communicated. We provide averages in our franchise report, which you can download here. As you investigate the Batteries Plus Bulbs franchise opportunity, we advise you to speak with individual franchisees to learn about their experience, including their profitability. We will do everything we can to facilitate the process.
No, you need no prior experience. We prepare you to open your store by equipping you with the knowledge needed to provide your customers with solutions. Upon signing your agreement, you will receive a user ID for our online training site, which is designed to teach you and your sales associates about battery and light bulb terminology, chemistries, applications, features, benefits and more. After completion, you will be ready to attend a two-week classroom training session, which will cover products, store systems, processes, selling skills, human resources, marketing, finance, your in-store tech center and more. We will also provide you with a separate, hands-on, 3-day training session for tablet, smartphone and mp3 player repairs, for at least two associates per store.
While Amazon is a formidable competitor for most retailers, there are significant barriers that make it hard for an online-only retailer to compete with Batteries Plus Bulbs. It is hard for most online marketplaces to:
  1. Ship products to customers quickly
  2. Help customers identify what they need to purchase to solve their problem.
  3. Guide customers to additional solutions
  4. Guaranty the quality of the products they sell

Here's how we have mastered each of these challenges.

1) Speed and convenience

When customers need a battery, they usually need it now. As a consumer, you're probably used to free or inexpensive 2-day shipping direct to your home via U.S. Postal Service carriers. That's not an option with a lot of the specialty products we sell, because of weight (which makes parcel shipping expensive) and the presence of hazardous chemicals (which restrict which shipping methods are available).

Batteries Plus Bulbs has its own supply chain and logistics operation to quickly deliver these parts to our stores. Thanks to the breadth of in-store inventories, franchisees usually are able to provide same-day solutions to customers. When we cannot, our main warehouse can deliver the needed product within 1-2 days.

2) Expertise and Service

When a device you rely on stops working, shopping online for a solution can be a miserable experience. Unless you already know exactly what you are looking for, solutions can be hard to find.

Customers come to Batteries Plus Bulbs because our store owners and their associates solve problems. We provide franchisees and associates a database that helps them quickly find solutions. The database represents 30+ years of hard work engineering solutions and identifying excellent replacement parts.

4) Cross-selling opportunities

An online retailer can only sell products that the customer already knows they need. Batteries Plus Bulbs store owners and associates have the opportunity to get to know their customers. Often, when a customer into the store for a solution to one problem, we discover several ways to help that customer within a few minutes of chatting. Building a one-on-one relationship with the customer not only leads to additional sales in the moment — it also keeps customers coming back.

3) Quality. Guaranteed.

There's a lot of cheap junk in some online marketplaces. That's just an unfortunate fact. The problem can be particularly pronounced when dealing with technical components like batteries, specialty lights and electronics.

Batteries Plus Bulbs executives regularly visit manufacturers worldwide to identify quality suppliers. Our engineers then test the quality of the products and services to ensure customers will be well-served.

Not at all. Batteriesplus.com actually drives sales for your store. When guests visit the site, we detect their location and then treat them as your customer. Any purchases flow to you. At the same time, we encourage in-store pickup. This gives you the opportunity to build a relationship with customers who discovered Batteries Plus Bulbs online. Once they see all the products and services you offer, they are much more likely to become a repeat customer.
The royalty is 5% of sales and is collected monthly.
The Franchise agreement specifies that your store will open 9 months from your franchise agreement date. The typical timeline is 7-8 months. The main variable is real estate availability in your chosen territory.
We do not offer internal financing, but third-party financing is available. We have well-established relationships with lenders that provide franchise financing to new business owners. Our list of lenders are already familiar with our business model, which makes the process a lot smoother.
We look for territories with at least 60,000 in population and enough business density to support business account sales. You can find more details here.
Our franchise owners come from a variety of backgrounds and our proven business model requires no previous industry experience. For example, our franchisees have been attorneys, engineers, accountants, IT technicians and pilots. Some are youthful entrepreneurs just launching careers while others are retirees looking for their next challenge. We often see former corporate executives who have decided to become a franchise owner and work for themselves. Many are also successful entrepreneurs seeking to add another business to their portfolio or looking to transition to an industry realizing strong growth.
While Batteries Plus Bulbs stores thrive today in a wide variety of markets, there are a few key attributes we look for, including residential population and local business density. As a consumer-oriented retail store, we prefer to be located in markets with destination-driven retail shopping areas typically populated with ‘big box’ stores. Freestanding buildings, strip centers or dual-usage buildings of at least 1500-1800 square feet, located in these high-traffic areas, are ideal locations for our storefronts. Our Franchise Development team will review your areas of interest and provide an assessment of the market opportunity.

Site Criteria

  1. Type - Freestanding, Dual-use Building, Pad Strip Center
  2. Area - Retail Cohesiveness
  3. General - Good Accessibility, Visible to Traffic, Stoplight Intersection

Demographics

  1. Population - Upwards of 60,000 people in trade area
  2. Income - Middle to upper household income
  3. Housing - Values above market median, high ownership
  4. Business Support - Over 3,000 businesses in market
